Medical Event Led To 10-Vehicle Accident On Long Island

Nine people were hospitalized Tuesday after a chain-reaction accident involving ten cars on . The happened at about 12:05 p.m. at Route 110 and Bentley Street in North Amityville. Police say a 76-year-old man driving a Lexus sedan suffered a medical event and sped up to a red light on Route 110. “I was sitting at the last light back there and the Lexus went flying by probably around 100 miles per hour¸” said resident . “I continued after the green light and by the time I got to this light it looked like a tidal wave in the air.”

Steep Increase In Pedestrian Traffic Fatalities In 2016

Pedestrian deaths rose a projected 11 percent in 2016¸ reaching a total of nearly 6¸000 people killed. That is the highest total in more than two decades¸ according to data out Thursday. If it helps to think of that increase in terms of real people¸ it means about 620 more pedestrians were killed by vehicles last year than the year before. The figures are preliminary¸ based on data from all states and the District of Columbia for the first six months of 2016 and then extrapolated for the rest of the year. During the first six months¸ states recorded 2¸660 pedestrian fatalities — an increase from 2¸486 deaths in the same time period in 2015.
